CABINETMAKING

DIPLOMA PROGRAM • TOTAL HOURS: 720 HOURS

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This curriculum is designed to provide classroom and lab “hands-on” training in woodworking and cabinetmaking and installation with particular emphasis placed on: design and layout, blueprint reading, material use in design, use of power machines and tools, surfacing techniques, abrasive techniques, adhesives and laminating procedures. Students in the Cabinetmaking program will work with the following equipment: table saw, miter saw, drill press, band saw, planer, joiner, router, shaper, edge banding machine and a wide range of power and pneumatic tools.

Upon graduation students may obtain positions in the following occupations: Cabinetmaker, Cabinet Installer, Store Fixtures Construction and Installation, Architectural Millwork and Cabinetmaking Apprentice.

PROGRAM PREREQUISITE

» Gr.12 OSSD or Mature Student Status
» Successful completion of entrance evaluation

PROGRAM LENGTH

(30 WEEKS, 720 HOURS)
The Cabinetmaking program is divided into 3 modules of theory and skills training. This program has been designed to provide students with the opportunity to start their new career in Cabinetmaking as soon as possible. Please see your enrollment agreement for specific days of the week and hours per day.

TUITION & FINANCIAL AID

All tuition costs include books, exam fees, tool kit and uniforms. Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify. Students are encouraged to visit our Business Affairs department for any questions related to tuition and/or financial aid.

CABINETMAKING I

Introduction to cabinetmaking will include the following subject matters: 1. Introduction to Cabinetmaking 2. Cabinetry Styles 3. Components of Design 4. Design Decisions 5. Human Factors in Design Decisions 6. Production Decisions 7. The Use of Working Drawings 8. Making Sketches and Mock-ups 9. Production of Working Drawings 10. Identifying Wood Characteristics 11. Lumber and Millwork 12. Cabinet Furniture Woods.

CABINETMAKING II

This part of the program will focus on sections following subject matters: 1. Veneers and plastic overlays 2. Glass, plastic, and ceramic products 3. Mechanical fasteners 4. Hardware 5. Ordering materials and supplies 6. Measuring and laying out materials 7. Sawing with stationary power machines 8. Sawing with hand and portable power tools 9. Surfacing with the jointer and planer 10. Surfacing with planes and scrapers 11. Drilling and boring 12. Shaping 13. Accessories, jigs and special machines 14. Joint making

CABINETMAKING III

This course includes the following subject matters: 1. Abrasives 2. Using abrasives and sanding machines 3. Adhesives 4. Gluing and clamping 5. Bending and laminating 6. Installing plastic laminates 7. Frame and panel components 8. Cabinet supports 9. Doors 10. Drawers 11. Cabinets and tabletops 12. Finishing decisions 13. Preparing surfaces for finish 14. Applying finishing materials 15. Preparing the surfacing for topcoating 16. Topcoating 17. Kitchen Cabinets 18. Furniture 19. Built in cabinetry and paneling 20. Industrial production of cabinetmaking 21. Employment in cabinetmaking.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

The student will learn WHMIS 2015, fall protection and basic first aid procedures as a prerequisite to performing home and property inspection in a safe manner.

MATHEMATICS

This program is designed to review those aspects of mathematics necessary for calculations used in cabinetmaking. In addition to computation, there will be a special emphasis placed on geometry, measurements, ratios and proportions.

JOB SEARCH

The course prepares students for their job search at the end of their schooling. It includes goal setting, networking, resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation and a mock interview.
