PROGRAM CODE: HVAC
DIPLOMA PROGRAM • TOTAL HOURS: 1200 HOURS
This program will provide students with a thorough hands-on and theoretical education in the heating, air conditioning and refrigeration fields. Students will gain valuable experience putting their training into practice in our state of the industry facilities preparing them for a wide range of opportunities in positions that service the residential and light commercial heating and cooling industries. Students may have the opportunity to write the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) G3 and G2 Gas Technician exams.
As students progress through the program they will become familiar with the design, installation and servicing of heating and air conditioning systems in residential and small commercial buildings. Students will also learn to size, select and maintain equipment for building comfort according to various industry standards.
Upon graduation students will be well prepared to enter the following occupations: Gas Technician, Heating & Ventilation Technician, Mechanical Systems Sales and entrance into an apprenticeship in a related trade (Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Sheet Metal).

The HVAC Technician program is divided into 5 modules of theory and skills training. This program has been specially designed so that students may begin their training at the start of any module and establish their HVAC Technician career earlier. Please see your enrollment agreement for specific days of the week and hours per day.
TUITION & FINANCIAL AID
All tuition costs include books, exam fees, tool kit and uniforms. Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify. Students are encouraged to visit our Business Affairs department for any questions related to tuition and/or financial aid.
SAFETY & WHMIS
This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of mathematics and its application to solar technology.
FASTENERS AND TOOLS
In this course, the student will be given an overview of the more common types of fasteners and supports used in the gas industry, as well as the basic tools the student will be required to use and understand.
PROPERTIES OF FUEL GASES
The student will have thorough knowledge and understanding of the properties and characters of fuel gases to ensure that you are able to practice safe gas-handling procedures at all times.
GAS CODE AND REGULATIONS
The student will learn about the various codes, approval agencies and standards with which each gas installation must comply.
INTRO TO ELECTRICITY
The student will learn basic electrical theory and practical trade-related applications, which is important for the safe and proper installation of gas appliances and systems.
INTRO TO PIPING
The student will learn the various types of piping and tubing systems used for gas.
INTRO TO GAS APPLIANCES
The student will gain a thorough knowledge of venting systems, types of burners, ignition systems, controls and safeties, and the characteristics of individual vented and non-vented appliances.
This course details four areas, from single family home dwelling to industrial application, where significant requirements for the installation, operation and testing of large piping and tubing systems should be understood by the gas technician.
The student will gain a thorough understanding of basic electricity and its application to gas system installation, servicing and maintenance.
The student will learn numerous types of controls and the fundamentals of the operation of these controls.
AIR CONDITIONING & REFRIGERATION – LEVEL 1
The student will gain knowledge and skills technicians need to be productive in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry.
GAS FIRED REFRIGERATION
The student will learn to install, operate, service and maintain a domestic gas-fired refrigerator. procedures for a domestic gas-fired refrigerator.
DOMESTIC APPLIANCES, SPACE HEATERS AND DECORATIVE APPLIANCES
The student will gain a thorough understanding of domestic appliance installation, servicing and maintenance. The student will also learn the installation, servicing and maintenance of space heaters and decorative appliances where the use of such appliances is appropriate.
FORCED WARM AIR HEATING SYSTEMS
The student will learn four areas where significant requirements for the installation, operation and testing of large piping and tubing systems should be understood by the gas technician.
FORCED AIR ADD ONS
The student will learn to select, install and maintain add-on devices. These devices include filters, air cleaners, humidifiers and cooling coils.
The student will learn the principles governing building heating, cooling and ventilation that directly relate to the comfort levels and health of building occupants. Air handling is described in relation to such premises.
THE BUILDING AS A SYSTEM
The student will understand how the building works as a system – the relationship to heat, moisture and air flow and comprehend building science principles.
WATER HEATER & COMBINATION SYSTEMS
The student will gain a thorough understanding of gas-fired water heaters and combination system installation, servicing and maintenance.
HYDRONIC HEATING SYSTEMS
The student will learn hydronic heating system installation, servicing and maintenance. This includes knowledge of the hydronic system boilers, control systems, circulators and pool heating systems.
The student will learn the proper preparation, selection and installation of conversion burners. This will include knowledge and recognition of the Code book, manufacturer’s instructions and local codes.
The student will learn the effective and safe installation and maintenance of venting systems.
The student will acquire knowledge of gas meters, propane storage containers and gas pressure regulators.
The course prepares students for their job search at the end of their schooling. This includes goal setting, networking, resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation and a mock interview.

The student will gain further knowledge and skills technicians need to be productive in the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry.
CODE REVIEW FOR G2
A comprehensive review of subjects studied will be covered in preparation for the G2 examination.
