Real estate is a regulated profession in Ontario, and all real estate professionals must be registered with the Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO). As the regulator of real estate services in the province, RECO’s role is to protect consumers by ensuring agents and brokerages follow the law.
The programs we offer are developed by RECO, ensuring they meet legislative requirements and prepare learners for successful careers in real estate.

Eligibility
To take the Real Estate Salesperson Program, you’ll need a Canadian secondary school diploma, GED, or an equivalent credential, along with proof of English language proficiency. Additional requirements will be reviewed during the application process.

Curriculum
RECO’s program includes five courses and two hands-on simulation sessions, each ending with a theory exam. It offers a deep, practical understanding of the real estate industry and compliance requirements, helping you navigate the complexities of both residential and commercial transactions.
Course 1: Real Estate Essentials
An introduction to the fundamentals of real estate, this course focuses on the role and responsibilities of a real estate agent, regulatory frameworks, and key legislation that governs the real estate services sector.
Exam: A two-hour theory exam.
Course 2: Residential Real Estate Transactions
This course focuses on the requirements for listing, marketing, selling and leasing residential real estate transactions. Topics include services for buyers and sellers, property types and construction, pricing, marketing strategies, agreements of purchase and sale, and regulatory obligations for real estate agents.
Exam: A three-hour theory exam.
Course 3: Additional residential real estate transactions
Building on Course 2, here you will explore specialized residential transactions such as condominiums, new construction, rural properties, multi-family dwellings, and residential leasing.

Simulation Session 1: Residential real estate transactions
A five-day practical session focusing on applying acquired knowledge of residential transactions, including single-family homes and condominiums.

Course 4: Commercial real estate transactions
This course introduces the unique requirements for listing, selling, marketing and leasing commercial properties, including office, retail, industrial, and agricultural properties. It also covers brokering business sales and preparing contractual agreements.
Exam: A three-hour theory exam.
Simulation Session 2: Commercial real estate transactions
A four-day practical session t, focusing on real estate transactions for commercial properties.
Exam: Simulation session 2 exams
Course 5: Getting started
Prepare to launch your real estate career. In this course you’ll learn how to get registered, maintain your registration, meet insurance requirements, and choose the right brokerage. It also offers tools and guidance to support your transition from student to registered agent during your first year of trading in real estate.
Note: This course does not include an exam.
Once you’ve completed all five courses, exams, and simulation sessions, you’ll be eligible to apply for registration as a real estate agent with RECO.
Program Timeline
The Pre-registration phase of the Real Estate Salesperson Program must be completed within 24 months from the day you begin your first course.
Next Steps
- After finishing the program, you are eligible to apply for registration with RECO.
- You have one year from the time you complete the pre-registration program to submit your application to become a registered real estate agent.
- Once registered, you’ll continue learning on the job - getting hands-on experience and training at your brokerage, including their specific policies and procedures.
- Within your first 2 years as a registered agent, you must complete the post-registration phase of the Real Estate Salesperson Program.
- Even after that, the learning doesn’t stop. You will keep building your skills through ongoing training at your brokerage and RECO’s continuing education.
